Youth Conference

Church groups frequently take young people on camps during Carnival. We helped at one such camp. Wayne was assigned to give a talk on the value of education. We collected and Wayne pinned during our time there, so the kids learned a little about flies. We found two new species, which means more work for Wayne.

 

Barra Velha, Santa Catarina, Brazil

We visited the Packhams at their beach home in Barra Velha, just south of Joinville. Wayne and Dean served together as missionaries in Southern Brazil many years ago. We had planned to visit and do some collecting. Unfortunately it rained most of the time so we learned to play Dominoes instead. We enjoyed the visit and spotted some very promising collecting sites. We will return and hope for better weather.

 

 

 

Antonina, PR, Brazil

We made a couple more trips to the coast, this time to Antonina, one of the oldest towns in Brazil, settled on the shores of Paranaguá Bay. Again, we drove through the mountains. The trees which earlier had purple and white flowers are fading and now trees with yellow flowers are blooming. It is very pretty. The beach we found is not exactly a tourist beach. However, flies must like it. Collecting was so good that we went back a second time! The tide was in on our return trip and some fishermen were using the canoes.

 

 

 

 

 

 

After the beach, we decided to go into the mountains to a waterfall. We took a long road that ended near the waterfall. There was also a small town. We asked a local man where the waterfall was.

He said,"Oh, its a long ways away, back up in the mountains. I've never been there. You have to go by horse."

So much for the map. It might be nice, but it will have to be in another lifetime for us. We settled for the small waterfall, more of a cascade. There were quite a few people rafting and tubing on a larger, white-water river. It looked refreshingly fun. The rainy season seems to have passed and it has been sunny, humid, and very hot.
