March 2010 - Wayne's Trip to UAE

Wayne, Khlid, & Tadeusz in Wadi Wurayah

Wayne was invited to conduct field work in the United Arab Emirates. His group stayed in the Emirate of Sharjah and went out to different localities almost every day. The roads are excellent and most buildings are very modern. He saw the current tallest building in the world in Dubai and the artificial "palm" islands off the coast of Dubai. Shore-fly collecting was very good despite the desert environment. The flies are all concentrated at the few sources of water. Camels were plentiful and often seen in the generally barren countryside. Public display of affection is strictly forbidden, quite a contrast from Brazil. He is sporting a very dark farmer's tan.

São Paulo

We took a 6 hour bus ride to São Paulo and spent 5 days doing museum work. We lived quite a distance from the museum in this very large city and commuted one and a half hours by city bus, subway, and trolley.

These photos are views of the city taken from the museum window.

São Paulo is a city with a population of 11,000,000. It swells to 18,000,000 if the suburbs are included.

Our Carnival Celebration

On Monday, during Carnival, we were invited to drive the Graciosa Highway to Antonina. The highway is the original road to the coast and is very windy with many tourist stops. We hoped that we would be able to do some collecting but there were too many people at each stop. We had lunch at the tourist town of Morretes and ice cream near the beach in Antonina. It was a very pleasant day which we will call our Carnival vacation because the collecting didn't work out too well.
