First Week of 2010

We spent New Year's Eve and Day on the farm in Castro with 30-40 family and friends of Luciane. We had a delicious dinner, welcomed the New Year, had fireworks, and dessert--all lasting until 2am for us. Many of the others stayed much later. We were also invited to a Churrascaria (Brazilian Barbeque) for lunch on New Year's Day. We very much enjoyed getting to know the New Year's customs of Brazil and appreciate the kindnesses of many people. (Remember, New Year's is in the middle of summer here. The weather was beautiful.)

Today, Sunday, we attended church at the Ala Tarumã, our new congregation. I was given a necklace as a gift for attending the first time. After the meetings, a young girl approached me, stood directly in front of me, and stared. I gave her a pat on the head to recognize her, but she just stood there, looking up, saying nothing. Finally a man standing nearby clued me in: she recognized what my necklace was and wanted candy! I may have to replenish it and wear it every week.

  1. What a sweet (literally) welcoming gift! You look great, Dianne. Brazil must be agreeing with you!
