Parque do Rio da Onça
We went on a field trip to the coastal city of Matinhos and collected in the Parque do Rio da Onça, a State Park of Parana. Matinhos is on the Atlantic coast and plenty of people were headed to the beach. We went the opposite way into the park to collect flies? As you can see from the picture below, all was not pleasant and beautiful. We kept saying, "Keep moving. Keep moving." We used insect repellent liberally and but it seemed to have little effect! We had more mosquitoes than flies in our nets but managed to come away with a nice selection of flies anyway. We have now collected 79 different species, more than was known from all of Brazil, and we haven't left the state of Parana. (We all escaped the chiggers rumored to be plentiful in the park.)
